Actress Jiah Khan is dead. Her suicide letter blames her boyfriend, Suraj Pancholi, for his emotional abuse. Police arrested the star earlier today.
Khan, who was a huge star of Bollywood films, killed herself on Monday. The 25-year-old starlet's body was discovered late last night.
Jiah entered the world of Bollywood in 2007. She was just 18 years old when she got her start in London.
Her first film, Nishabd, earned her critical success. The director of that film, Ram Gopal Varma, issued a statement to the press:
"Never ever seen a debutant actress with more spunk and more spirit than Jiah when I was directing her in Nishabd. The whole unit of Nishabd was literally in love with Jiah."
His kind words were overshadowed by today's developments. Khan's boyfriend, Suraj Pancholi, has been arrested in Mumbai.
He was not present at the time of her death, however, he may be charged with abetting her suicide. Her final words indicate that Pancholi was "ruining her life."
Others have made similar accusations.
Khan's mother alleged that Mr. Pancholi, son of Bollywood parents, physically and mentally abused Khan. Her mother went on to allege that Pancholi raped his daughter.
These may not be the harshest allegations. Khan's suicide letter claims that Suraj forced her to get an abortion after he raped her.
An investigation is pending to determine the truth of that statement. Until then, India (and the world) is choosing to remember her as the beautiful and talented actress that she was.
