The acclaimed dance production Promise by Winifred Haun & Dancers will be returning to the stage in March at the Ruth Page Center in Chicago. Promise features a cast of more than 20 dancers and was based on the novel East of Eden by John Steinbeck.
The dance was choreographed by Haun in 2009, based on three years of research and development into the women, images and psychological themes found in Steinbeck’s novel about the Salinas Valley. The show incorporates aerial straps combined with modern dance to tell the story of violence and redepemtion.
Company rehearsal director Zada Cheeks, will perform the lead male role of Adam, and company dancer Ariel Dorsey will dance the lead female role of Cathy. Newcomer April Falcon will dance the second female lead and Timothy Bowser and Jesse Hoisington will dance the roles of twins Cal and Aaron.
The music of George Crumb, Jolie Holland, Maki Ishii and Loudon Wainwright III and Kanye West are featured in the sound design for Promise. As a special treat, choreographer and stilt artist Kristina Isabelle will open the Friday night performance, performing her new color for stilts. The amazing Leopold Group will open the Saturday night performance with a section from their 2014 group work Enter Elizabeth.
Promise will be shown at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts in Chicago March 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. The latter showing will include a master class with Cheeks featuring choreography from Promise at 5 p.m. Click here to purchase tickets.
