Michael Sam has become a beacon for self-respect and equal rights in the world of sports. When he was originally drafted into the NFL, fans got to watch as he celebrated with his boyfriend. Ironically, some people, including Sam, believe that this is what, eventually, earned him a boot out the door. Now, after coming clean about the situation with Oprah Winfrey, and spending multiple weeks as a news headliner, Michael has finally popped the question to his long time partner.
Sam's performance in college originally got him noticed. All four of his years at the University of Missouri made Sam look like an NFL prospect.
He led the SEC in both categories and tied Missouri's single-season record for sacks. He was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week in two consecutive weeks. Also, he was awarded Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
So, why did this great player get cut? It didn't make any sense.
However, According to The Huffington Post, Sam revealed in an interview with Oprah that he felt his homosexuality was the cause:
"When Michael Sam became the first openly gay man drafted into the NFL, the world watched him celebrate with his longtime boyfriend, Vito Cammisano. In those brief moments captured on film, we were given a small glimpse into Sam's world. The lens opened a bit wider on Saturday night with the airing of Michael Sam on OWN, a 90-minute documentary about the history-making athlete and his desire to live an open, authentic life."
Well, the time has finally come. Sam popped the question.
According to TMZ Sports, Michael got down on one knee at the Vatican:
"Michael Sam clearly wanted to make a statement when he proposed to his longtime BF -- 'cause the football player popped the question right in Vatican City. Sam posted the pic ... which shows HE was the one who got down on one knee and popped the question to Vito Cammisano last week. We're told Sam and Vito were inside St. Peter's Basilica at the time. It's sort of an act of defiance ... considering the Catholic church is still anti-gay marriage."
