It has been announced that The Harkness Foundation for Dance will donate $5 million in grants to 5 organizations that are considered of importance to the dance world.
The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Joyce Theater, New York City Center, the 92nd Street Y and NYU Langone Medical Center’s Hospital for Joint Diseases, which houses the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, will all receive $1 million from the foundation. This marks the Harkness Foundation's largest donation ever.
According to Broadway World, each recipient will use the funding in different ways. BAM plans on providing leadership support for dance presentations in its three theaters. It will also contribute to an annual Harkness Dance Residency at the BAM Fisher. New York City Center plans to completely renovation its three studios and create a Harkness Fund for Dance.
The Joyce Theater plans to use the money to start a new performance series titled “American Dance Platform,” which will be dedicated to the foundations longtime Executive Director, the late Theodore S. Bartwink. The money will also support their Unleashed program of off-site performances which features small dance companies.
The Y plans to expand educational programs and initiate a dance artist residency program which will support a mid-career artist, a legacy company and an emerging artist. The Hospital will create a new boardroom named for the foundation’s chairman, William A. Perlmuth. The boardroom will become the central hub for education and networks for the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries and the hospital. The money will also be used to develop a new series of online courses on dance injury and treatment, which will be made available at a low cost to medical professionals, dancers, parents and dance teachers.
