Former WWE Champ Rey Mysterio Retiring From Pro Wrestling After Falling Off the Face of the Earth

At one time, Rey Mysterio was one of the most popular wrestlers in the WWE. However, for the last year or so, there hasn't been much news on the luchador. Fans last heard that he was appearing for a lesser-known promotion, and that he wasn't going to appear in August's live WWE event. Mysterio has been gone for quite a while now, and all the signs are pointing toward the WWE letting Rey go for good.

Oscar Gutierrez Rubio is better known by his ring name, Rey Mysterio. The 40-year-old wrestler practices the highflying wrestling style known as Lucha Libre.

Before the WWE, Rey wrestled for WCW, where he won the WCW World Tag Team Championship three times. He also won the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship.

Once he did make it to everyone's favorite wrestling organization, the WWE, Mysterio became a three-time world champion. He held the World Heavyweight Championship twice and once received the overall WWE Championship title.

However, according to WrestleZone, the last we heard of Rey was that he had taken his talents elsewhere:

"Rey Mysterio [was] wrapped up in a contract dispute that will see him employed for the next year, against his will. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there has been no contact between WWE and Rey Mysterio since May. Furthermore, the company did not reprimand him for appearing for another promotion, he was not asked to participate in the 8/23 live event in his hometown of San Diego, and WWE's legal department has not made an effort to contact AAA about the incident."

Since then, Mysterio has all but fallen off the face of the earth, and according to Inquisitr, it looks like the McMahon is finally going to let the onetime great go:

"WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio has been off of WWE programming for months now. He has asked for his release and even stopped cashing WWE checks months ago as well. Sadly, WWE didn't want to let the luchador go, despite his wishes. [Still] this has led to the current rumor... that [the] WWE may release Mysterio very soon, before he can compete in WrestleMania 31."
