New TV Wednesday: ‘American Idol,’ ‘L&O: SVU,’ Neil Patrick Harris on ‘AHS,’ ‘Empire’ and ‘People's Choice Awards’ [UPDATE] [PROMO]

The holidays are over, that means that TV is coming back. There are some big things coming this Wednesday night, including American Idol, The Peoples Choice Awards, Law & Order: SVU, Empire and Neil Patrick Harris on American Horror Story: Freak Show.

Fox kicks the night with Season 14 premiere of American Idol at 8:00 p.m.eastern. The first episode features the Nashville audition round.

Following American Idol is the series premiere of Empire at 9:00 p.m. eastern. The new hip-hop series stars Terrence Howard and is created by acclaimed writer/director Lee Daniels.

ABC will air its comedy blocking with The Middle at 8:00, The Goldbergs at 8:30, Modern Family at 9:00 and Blackish at 9:30.

CBS starts its night off with an all new episode of The Mentalist at 8:00 p.m. followed by the People’s Choice Awards from 9:00 - 11:00.

NBC is all new starting with the season’s surprise hit, The Mysteries of Laura at 8:00 p.m. followed by Law & Order: SVU and Chicago P.D.

Over on the other side of dial is FX’s American Horror Story: Freak Show, airing at 10:00 p.m. The all new episode features the debut appearance of Neil Patrick Harris on the show.
