Meryl Streep has reason to be upset. Her hit 2008 movie musical Mamma Mia has been dethroned for biggest opening for a Broadway adaptation. However, Meryl Streep also has a reason to celebrate, because her new movie musical Disney’s Into the Woods has taken that top spot. The new film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim classic, also stars Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, and Tracey Ullman.
Disney’s Into the Woods didn’t take the top spot in the Christmas weekend box office, that honor went to Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: : The Battle of the Five Armies, but the musical still had a very successful opening weekend. The best one for any movie adaptation of a broadway musical.
The new film drew in a whopping $31 million over the weekend and $46.1 million if you tack on the extra days for Christmas. That makes it the largest opening for any screen adaptation of a Broadway musical.
Disney's distribution executive Vice President Dave Hollis released a statement to the press about the film’s opening (via Huffington Post):
"To be able to take (Stephen) Sondheim and (James) Lapine's work and make it available to a mass audience? It's a great holiday gift in and of itself."
