Odell Beckham Jr. Impressive Stats Make for Valuable Rookie Card, 2014 Good Year for Sports Memorabilia

Fantasy Football cash cow and breakout rookie of the year, Odell Beckham Jr, could be the most popular wide receiver in the NFL this season. Someone clearly thinks that Beckham has a long and successful career ahead of him, because his rookie card just sold for close to $2,000. December 2014 seemed to be a good month for sports memorabilia in general, as one of Babe Ruth's caps sold for over $300,000.

Before the NFL, Beckham played college ball for Louisiana State University. His performance there was almost as impressive as his first year in the pros.

As a freshman, he recorded 41 receptions for 475 yards and two touchdowns. He was named a freshman All-SEC selection. As a sophomore in 2012, he started 12 of 13 games. He finished first on the team in receiving yards with 713 and second in receptions with 43.

His senior year was even more outstanding -- he finished the season with 57 receptions for 1,117 yards and eight touchdowns. Logically he was brought into NFL early in the 2014 Draft.

Now, Beckham is destroying it as a member of the New York Giants, and according to NJ.com, he already has some very devoted fans:

"Perhaps someone is buying in on the idea that Giants rookie phenom Odell Beckham Jr. is a potential future Hall of Famer. That would explain the amount of money shelled out on eBay for a card bearing the likeness of the receiver. ESPN's Darren Rovell tweeted that someone spent a whopping $1,725 on the piece of cardboard..."

The site finishes by saying, "Beckham has lived up to the hype with his 71 receptions, 972 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns in 10 games. So maybe that card will be worth even more someday if he keeps putting up numbers like that."

Interestingly, Beckham's card was not the only piece of sport memorabilia to go to a lucky fan. According to CNN, one lucky fan coughed up big bucks for one of Babe Ruth's ball caps:

"A baseball hat Babe Ruth Babe Ruth wore during his 1934 tour of Japan just sold for $303,277 on the site Grey Flannel Auctions...The navy blue hat emblazoned with a "US" logo is believed to be the only hat the legendary slugger wore during the month-long tour, according to Grey Flannel Auctions..."
