Sony is no stranger to hacks, especially when it comes to the Sony PlayStation network. However, the company’s Motion Picture division was the target of a recent attack. Personal information, including the social security numbers of thousands of employees, past and present, dating back to 1955 was released. Some of the celebrities affected by the hack include Sylvester Stallone, Rebel Wilson and Judd Apatow. The upcoming Sony Pictures film, The Interview, starring James Franco (who will be hosting SNL this weekend) and Seth Rogen, is believed to be the reason for the attack. The movie is about two reporters who go to North Korea to covertly kill Kim Jong-un. Could this be North Korea’s response to the film?
Sony Pictures is getting ready to release its new film The Interview, this Christmas. The film about an American plot to kill North Korea’s leader. has surprisingly not gone over well with Kim Jong-un.
Now Sony Pictures has been hacked leading many to believe that might be North Korea’s retaliation.
Identity Finder chief executive Todd Feinman commented on the hack, telling The L.A. Times:
"There's no question that the biggest take-away is that Sony and all organizations need to treat sensitive data much more carefully. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when a hacker gets in. This is the type of confidential information you don't want people stealing."
However, Feinman doesn’t believe that North Korea was responsible for the hack, adding:
"The data was so random that it didn't look like an insider who knew what to go after. It also didn't feel like something North Korea would do. I think they would be making a much bigger deal [of it] to embarrass Sony."
