Macklemore may have just ruined the a lot of the goodwill he has been trying to build, with a move that makes Justin Bieber look a decent human being. The rapper went for the cheap joke this past weekend when he performed hit “Thrift Shop,” a song about being frugal, while wearing a fake beard, curly black wig and fake nose. The “Same Love” singer has rather nonchalantly denied that he was dressed as a Jewish stereotype.
Last Friday Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed a surprise concert, however the real surprise was Macklemore outfit. The disguised rapper wore a costume that looked an awful lot like a negative Jewish sterotype. Following the controversial performance Macklemore responded by simply tweeting:
“A fake witches nose, wig, and beard = random costume. Not my idea of a stereotype of anybody.”
Not everybody saw it the same way….OK! It’s more like no one else in the world saw it that way.
Neighbors star Seth Rogen told it the way he saw it, tweeting:
“.@macklemore, first you trick people into thinking you're a rapper, now you trick them into thinking you're Jewish?”
Macklemore’s choice of attire was especially shocking considering his support of civil and equal rights. In his song “Same Love,” Macklemore raps about marriage equality:
“A word rooted in hate, yet our genre still ignores it
Gay is synonymous with the lesser
It's the same hate that's caused wars from religion
Gender to skin color, the complexion of your pigment
The same fight that led people to walk outs and sit ins
It's human rights for everybody, there is no difference!
Live on and be yourself
When I was at church they taught me something else
If you preach hate at the service those words aren't anointed
That holy water that you soak in has been poisoned
When everyone else is more comfortable remaining voiceless
Rather than fighting for humans that have had their rights stolen “
What do you think about Macklemore’s costume? Do you think it was anti-semitic? Could it all have been just an honest mistake Let us know your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
