Tensions are high in New York City tonight, as the city is reeling with the grand jury’s decision to not indicate officer Daniel Pantaleo for the choke hold death of Eric Garner. Protest are currently be held all over the city, with protesters chanting “I Can’t Breath,” which were some of Garner’s last words. Protesters have also been heard chanting “Shut it Down,” referring to NBC’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting, which is going on in NYC tonight.
Tonight’s event is hosted by The Today Show’s Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Savannah Guthrie and Natalie Morales host. The lighting will feature performances by Idina Menzel, Lady Gaga, Trisha Yearwood Pentatonix, LeAnn Rimes,Tony Bennett, Cyndi Lauper, and Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane with Sara Bareilles.
Police are taking extra precaution to keep protesters away from tonight’s live broadcast. Protesters trying to make there way to Rockefeller Center can also be heard chanting “No Justice, No Trees!”
Despite the protest that the show is still on, as Natalie Morales has tweeted:
“Getting ready for the #rockcenterxmas tree lighting! Should be a great show!”
NBC’s official Twitter account is still promoting tonight’s event, writing:
“You won't find a more festive place right now than the Rockefeller ice rink below the big tree! #RockCenterXMAS”
