Christmas has come early, or really late, depending on you how you look at it. The HBO Go app has officially launched on the Microsoft Xbox One. After only a year of waiting, HBO subscribers, and their freeloading friends, are finally able to watch Game of Thrones, The Leftovers, Newsroom, Boardwalk Empire and True Blood and all their other favorite shows, from the free app.
Earlier in the year,Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Devices and Studios, Yusuf Mehdi, spoke about the app telling Xbox.com’s Xbox Wire blog:
“Xbox fans are spending more time than ever on the console, spending more than five hours a day on Xbox One. Today as we announce new commitments from dozens of our partners, including deep integration with experiences like Twitter and Vine, we hit an important milestone in our journey to deliver unique experiences on Xbox. We’re thrilled to break new ground in social TV experiences like we’re doing with Twitter on Xbox One.”
The Xbox One app launch comes on the heels of the announcement that HBO is planning a standalone service, free from the chains of cable.
However, HBO isn’t going to complete breakaway from cable providers, as HBO CEO Richard Plepler recently reports (via Deadline):
“Who controls the broadband pipe in the United States? Our distributors. So if you want a broadband only product, that’s the biggest low hanging fruit out there….I said ‘look there’s gold in the hills. Let’s go get it.’”
