Speaking of Grimm, the original fairy-tales have been translated to english with all their gory glory kept in tact.
University of Minnesota professor emeritus of German and comparative literature, Jack Zipes, has translated the original tales into English, maintaining their original content.
Zipes recently spoke to The Guardian about the new (old) edition of the book:
"The original edition was not published for children or general readers. It was only after the Grimms published two editions primarily for adults that they changed their attitude and decided to produce a shorter edition for middle-class families."
Zipes insist that the stories are still fit for children, or most children, adding:
"It is time for parents and publishers to stop dumbing down the Grimms' tales for children. If there is anything offensive, readers can decide what to read for themselves. We do not need puritanical censors to tell us what is good or bad for us."
What do you think of the new book? Will you be picking up a copy? Not ready for the new (old) edition? Well why not try out a little Into the Woods, a slightly darker Disney musical meshing of all the classics.
