Word has it that the man responsible for bringing back the Fast and Furious films' popularity as well as making Paul Walker, whose autopsy updates revealed was still alive immediately after the car crash, a household name once again, Justin Lin may be returning to the franchise--to shut it down. According to the latest gossip news updates, Universal is considering having Lin return to direct all the final Fast flicks at the same time, so the studio can keep up with the one movie-per-year schedule it set for itself prior to Walker's death. According to the latest gossip news updates, Lin could use the work since his deal to direct Jeremy Renner in the next Bourne Legacy sequel looks tenuous given Matt Damon's return for a fourth independent Bourne Identity franchise film. Although, Conjuring director James Wan reportedly did a phenomenal job with Fast and Furious 7--even finishing the film ahead of deadline--fans as well as the cast and crew would love to see Justin Lin retire the franchise that he made famous.
The smart money is Hollywood these days has Fast and Furious franchise's regular director Justin Lin returning for the final two or three films that will reportedly retire the series.
According to the folks in the know over at Entertainment Weekly, it is starting to look like Universal will try to get Lin to return to the franchise that he helped make famous:
"Universal could soon begin serious talks to bring Lin back to direct not just an eighth Fast & Furious movie but multiple movies, shot simultaneously, which would serve as a finale to the entire Fast & Furious saga."
Although the powers that be have never officially acknowledged any plans to extend the franchise for another trilogy of movies, Paul Walker admitted in an interview just days before he died that plans to make at least a Fast 8 and 9 had already been all laid out (via WhoSay):
"There's going to be an eight. It's like who's going to be in the 'eight' I think is the question.
"I think the debate is whether it's seven, eight, nine or seven, eight, nine, 10. I know, it doesn't even make sense."
It was also reported before Paul Walker's death last November that Toyko Drift lead Lucas Black was not only returning for Fast and Furious 7, but he also had signed a deal to appear in the next two Fast flicks as well--lending credence to the reports that Universal is already shopping around for a director to make several films at once.
You know...maybe it wouldn't be too bad if Vin Diesel decided to sit one or two of the next movies out either.
