Fox’s Gotham is all new tonight, with another killer episode detailing the rise of the Penquin. Robin Lord Taylor (The Walking Dead) has recently opened up about life before the Penguin, including his audition for Todd in Breaking Bad.
The official plot synopsis for tonight’s all new episode of Gotham, titled “The Mask” reads:
“Gordon and Bullock check out a brutal fight club that features bouts between candidates applying for work at a financial firm. Meanwhile, upon his return to school, Bruce makes a new friend.”
Robin Lord Taylor’s performance as Penquin is making the little-known actor a star. Before he landed his big gig on Gotham, Taylor had a bit part on AMC’s The Walking Dead, and he even auditioned for the role of Todd on Breaking Bad.
Recently, Robin Lord Taylor spoke to USA Today about his life pre-Gotham:
"It was extremely frustrating. I would audition for big things and get very, very close to them and they wouldn't happen. I was just succeeding enough to not be able to quit. To throw it all away would be ridiculous. But at the same time, it was not enough to be fulfilling or lucrative."
Taylor isn’t taking the role lightly, adding details about his approach to the character:
"I want to approach this material with the same sort of enthusiasm that the hardcore comic-book fans have. Even in the canon of Batman there aren't too many origin stories of Penguin; for the most part he is already the portly gentleman who has established himself as a major player in the underworld of Gotham City. So there's still freedom to create this character and not feel pressure to hit certain marks that people have in their minds."
Check out the all new episode tonight at 8:00 p.m. eastern on Fox.
