The Israeli comedy troupe Tziporela is bringing its sketch comedy show Odd Birdz to the Off-Broadway Players Theatre in Greenwich Village for a five-week run October 14 - November 19.
Tziporela has been performing its absurdist takes on everyday situations and topical issues for nearly a decade. Press notes describe the show as "comprised of twenty short sketches about daily occurrences, sometimes quite ordinary situations, but [with] great writing, acting, dancing, and comedic timing."
Nissan Nativ Acting Studio graduates founded Tziporela nine years ago, since then selling out many shows in Israel and abroad. They have been planning their Off-Broadway debut for two and a half of those years, adapting some of the skits for American audiences, performing them in English, and giving themselves the temporary name "Odd Birdz" to make it easier for English speakers to pronounce. ("Tziporela" means "little bird.")
The troupe will also be leading workshops in the New York area, including at the Juilliard Drama Division.
"We know we'll get there and have some amazing experiences, but I don't know what [critical New York audiences will] say," founding member Gal Friedman told the Times of Israel, "And I'm dying to know what they'll say."
Tickets are available online or by calling 866-811-4111.
