Joy Behar, the outspoken comic and former co-host of The View, will bring her solo autobiographical play Me, My Mouth and I to the Off-Broadway Cherry Lane Theatre this fall. The show begins previews November 6 with an official opening November 23 and runs through December 21.
Me, My Mouth and I follows Behar's "rollicking childhood in Brooklyn to center stage as one of America's premiere talk show hosts and comediennes." An author, touring comic, and winner of Emmy, MAC and Cable ACE Awards, Behar could be said to be coming full circle, since she has now made her way Off Broadway, and 27 years ago she had a variety series on Lifetime Television called Way Off Broadway. (Said show is so obscure IMDB has no knowledge of it, but here's a clip.)
The comic, who turns 72 tomorrow, was one of the original co-hosts on ABC's hit gabfest The View, appearing on the show from 1997 until last year when she told Deadline, "You reach a point when you say to yourself, 'Do I want to keep doing this?' There are other things on my plate I want to do--I've been writing a play, I've been neglecting my standup."
A lot of people say things like that when they're making a career transition, but Joy Behar meant it--here's that play.
The View continues to get the comic's name in the news, more than a year after her departure. As recently as this past July she clashed (from a distance) with former co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, her political opposite number. Her feud with co-host Star Jones was famous in its day.
