LIVE REVIEW: Roomful of Teeth, Ted Hearne Sparkle at National Sawdust for ACO's SONiC Festival
Here in the dwindling nights of the American Composers Orchestra's aptly titled showcase SONiC: Sounds of a New Century, composers aged 40 and under are filing out of venues in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, all of which have played safe harbor to their thoroughly modern machinations. Saturday night's performance at National Sawdust, care of the unflappable vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, duly certified festival, venue and ensemble together as one hell of a discovery. Brian Landrus Trio Album, 'The Deep Below,' Blueland/Palmetto Records [REVIEW]
Swing low, sweet sax man! Emitting a deep guttural sound as if from the esophagus of a bullfrog, Brian Landrus, with his pianoless trio of bassist Lonnie Plaxico and drummer Billy Hart, goes for that lowball swoon on 'The Deep Below' on Blueland/Palmetto Records. The low wind ace has mastered baritone sax, bass clarinet, bass sax and bass flute, putting him right smack dab on the ground floor of sound. His sixth CD as a leader is also the debut of his trio.
