Derek Jeter is like an all-time nice guy. He is universally respected. As he will be retiring at the end of this season, the 40-year old Yankee just participated in his final All-Star Game as a player. As his career winds down, he has been greeted at nearly every turn with accolades and honors. He even scored a controversial double at the All-Star Game after Adam Wainright (some think) suggested he was going to lay an easy one across the plate for Jeter. So what's his beef with Cleveland? Apparently that's where the Yankees found out that Masahira Tanaka had a torn UCL, making him the fourth starting pitcher to be injured since opening day. In his diary two weeks ago, he trashed the whole city of Cleveland, wondering if it were cursed.
When someone like Derek Jeter says something bad about you, you might need to rethink a couple of things in your life. But what if you're a major American city? (via Grantland):
"Nothing good ever happens in Cleveland. You wonder if that's just a coincidence, or if the whole city's cursed. You wonder if anything good will ever happen here ever again. You hate to say that kind of thing, but it's hard not to wonder if the place is beyond help. You hope LeBron doesn't come back; he'd probably get hit by a truck in the middle of his press conference. You just want him to be safe."
Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainright is being relentlessly hounded by the press about a statement that he made about sending "pipe shots" at Derek Jeter. The assumption after Jeter doubled off of him was that he was giving him easy pitches, but now he says his original words were misinterpreted (via ESPN):
"What I meant to say was I'm intentionally trying to throw a strike to get him out. It's what I do most of the time, almost all the time. 'Piping one' is the wrong window for that. It really is. If I'm going to get taken to the slaughterhouse for saying a stupid phrase, then I deserve it. What can you do?"
Basically it's a no-win situation for Wainright.
