Convicted Dog Killer Michael Vick Gunning For Geno Smith's Starting Spot?

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is convinced Michael Vick is gunning for quarterback Geno Smith's spot. Not his dog Spot; that would be disastrous. Nope, Johnson is sure that Vick is actively seeking the starting QB position, despite his repeated proclamations that he's the backup veteran. With his competitive spirit and perseverance, Vick, a convicted dog killer in most people's eyes, just may be what the 8-8 Jets need to improve their stock in the NFL.

In 2007 Vick was convicted of being involved in a dog fighting ring. He served 21 months in prison, but in the public eye he will always be remembered for that.

Woody Johnson doesn't. He sees a winner. Johnson sees a born competitor. Even though some say Vick is content simply being a backup QB offering sage advice to rookies, the Jets owner isn't buying it (via Reading Eagle):

"I don't think Michael Vick is resigned to anything. I think Michael Vick is a born competitor, like most of the people in this locker room will compete on everything. So I wouldn't take it at face value."

Geno Smith, meanwhile, has been very diplomatic. He seems like a pro at answering questions without answering them, like "do you think Michael Vick is going to take your place as starting QB?" (via Newsday):

"I haven't really been paying attention to that aspect of it. I know Mike and myself, we train very hard and we'll push one another . . . We're all getting better and I appreciate having Mike and having him on my team as a teammate."

One thing's for sure: if you invite Vick over for dinner, hide your pets. Just in case- old habits die hard.
