With all the hype surrounding the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4, a few stories slipped through the cracks. Like this one- Molly Schuyler (pronounced "Skylar", apparently) decimated 26 burgers on her way to winning Z-Burger's Independence Burger Eating Contest in Washington, D.C. a few weeks back. The contest, although held on July 3, was part of the city's Independence Day festivities. Schuyler, a mother of four from Bellevue, Nebraska, has been a competitive eater for at least 2 and a half years, but has really gained notoriety this year for breaking records at steak houses in Amarillo and Portland for finishing off a 72-ounce steak in record time at both places.
Schuyler down 26 burgers in 10 minutes on July 3 to become the first woman to win the Z-Burger Contest, and afterward she said she could really go for a few more (via TMZ):
"Well, Molly took her talents to the East Coast on Thursday for Z-Burger's annual Independence Burger Eating Championship ... and crushed it ... winning the $1,500 prize and beating last year's winner by 1 whole burger."
Of course, by that point, Schuyler had already been in the spotlight for her record-breaking eating skills (via CNN):
"The legend of Molly Schuyler grew again this week when she went to Amarillo, Texas, and demolished Joey Chestnut's record time for the 72-ounce steak challenge at The Big Texan Steak Ranch."
Not only did she complete the challenge in less than five minutes, she did it a second time, in only nine minutes. That means she had two complete meals, including nine pounds of beef, in about 14 minutes.
Just for grins, she also ate the Diablo Burrito, the world's spiciest burrito, in about 3.5 minutes, shattering the previous owner's record.
