The San Francisco 49ers are poised to have another playoff-bound season behind young QB Colin Kaepernick. But how effective will he be if his prized tight end cannot come to an agreement with the team? Vernon Davis has been MIA during the off-season, holding out for a contract re-negotiation. The business-minded Davis says he is just doing what's best for his career, but how will that affect Kaepernick and the 49ers' passing game? Kap, who was recently the subject of a sexual assault investigation in Miami, has been found innocent of the accusations against him. Now, is he going into the preseason without one of his favorite targets? Does Kap need Davis to hurry up and sign a new contract?
Davis, along with guard Alex Boone, are sitting out mandatory practices in hopes of getting bigger deals, essentially playing chicken (via Bleacher Report):
"Boone and Davis are officially in a stalemate with the Niners. They are refusing to show up until they get new contracts, while the team is refusing to negotiate until they show up. The Niners can fine players $30,000 per day for every day that they miss training camp."
For the sake of all parties involved, and especially for Colin Kaepernick's sake, Davis needs to come into the fold and get the 49ers back to the NFC Championship game (via Bleacher Report):
"All this screams what should be blindingly obvious-it's very important that the 49ers and Vernon Davis come to an agreement on his contract status soon. Davis' holdout isn't likely to go too long into the regular season, but if it did, that could be disastrous for Kaepernick's development."
If they can do that, and keep their roster out of jail and out of the press, San Francisco just might give ol' Russ and Seattle a run for their money one more time this winter.
