The saga has reached unprecedented new lows at this point. Donald Sterling, who has sued the NBA for kicking him out of their club, is holding of the sale of the LA Clippers with a crazy lawsuit. His wife Shelly sold the team to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for $2 billion after having him declared mentally incompetent. Now the disgruntled, crazy old racist is tying up the whole process in litigation, basically to be spiteful. As a result, he may still be technically the owner at the start of next season. Will that result in a player boycott?
Even though Shelly Sterling produced documents saying he empowered her to act on behalf of the Sterling Family Trust, Donald is crying foul now. It seems as though his main beef is that his wife embarrassed him by having him declared mentally incompetent (via CNN):
"Sterling challenged the idea that he couldn't run the Clippers, insisting that 'to say someone else could take over is ludicrous.' He added that he still runs five corporations."
Sterling may not be legally crazy, but he sure sounded crazy when blurted out "I know everything," in court last week.
While he is confident the situation will resolve itself, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver isn't making any promises. In fact, he says it's possible the team will still be in his hands at the start of next season (via Yahoo Sports):
"No, I cannot say with certainty [Sterling won't still own the team], and I can't say with certainty because it's in the hands of the probate court right now, and Donald is in the process of suing us for lots of money, and we're defending ourselves against those lawsuits,"
