Chelsea Handler and Netflix are about to change the face of late night TV forever, by moving it to the internet. OK! We say that but come on, who doesn’t have their Netflix hooked up to their TV? Handler was rumored to replace both David Letterman, and Craig Ferguson, is moving her talk show to the streaming service, breaking the mold of the traditional late night format. Following Handler’s famous interview with Howard Stern, Netflix c0-founder and CEO Reed Hastings has opened up about singing Handler.
Chelsa Handler recently burned a lot of bridges when she went on the Howard Stern and blasted her old employer E!. After calling the network “a sad place to live,” she went on to discuss her next move (Via Deadline):
“If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested. I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move. I’m more excited than I’ve been in awhile, and the team at Netflix is the most forward thinking, alert group I’ve sat down with in ages. No offense to the Shahs Of Sunset.”
Now Reed Hastings has opened up about the new series, telling The Washington Post:
“It’s a talk show, that it’s different than movies and TV. But it’s a talk show about entertainment, movies and TV shows, so it feels like a natural complement. But it’s still very different from reality, sports, video games and music videos. Another category that we don’t do is educational stuff, all the stuff like “cook the perfect quiche.” If you want to make the perfect quiche, type it into YouTube and that’s where you'll find that content. We think of Chelsea as expanding and filling out a certain proposition. Maybe she'll do an incredible show and with her, we'll reinvent the format and you'll watch them in stacks and you don’t have to watch at 11 at night but watch earlier, maybe more convenient than the current system but still feels topical and fresh.”
