UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer has recently been called upon to reflect on the past, the present, and the future. The ten-year anniversary of UFC 48 makes Buffer remember the night he botched the call on Frank Mir's heavyweight title win. He is extremely apologetic about his contribution to the controversy even to this day. Looking forward, however, Buffer has also recently proclaimed a five-year old kid the next Mike Tyson!
Bruce Buffer, often thought of as "the other Buffer brother", has nonetheless put together a fantastic career, primarily as a UFC ring announcer. Though he is a well-respected member of the fight community, he still remembers vividly one of his biggest blunders in the Octagon.
Frank Mir beat Tim Sylvia by submission with an arm-bar hold even though Sylvia didn't tap out. Mir had broken Sylvia's arm, causing the fight to stop and Mir to become the next Heavyweight Champion.
Bruce Buffer, however, got caught up in the confusion (via MMA Junkie):
"'I admit I made a mistake and announced him with "the winner" instead of "And ... new!" and I still feel terrible about it. I was so caught up in the chaos in the octagon that I messed it up.'
"'You go out there and win the UFC heavyweight belt, and you do something in life that should be a great moment, and everyone is booing,' Mir recalled. 'Even Bruce Buffer was thrown off and announced me as just the winner and not the new champion. I didn't get any recognition. It was just a bad moment.'"
One call Buffer hopes he doesn't blow is his recent proclamation about a 5-year old kid named Nijee (via TMZ):
"Bruce... tells us the footage blew him away ... 'He's like a 2-foot tall Mike Tyson!'
"Buffer says the kid's form is incredible -- and if he truly has a passion for the sport as he gets older ... 'He'll be a force to be reckoned with.'"
