Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez is moving to a new jail facility today to be closer to his lawyers, who are based in Boston. He is being moved from Bristol County House of Correction in Dartmouth to either Suffolk County Jail or the South Bay House of Correction, both of which are in Boston. While a tentative trial date for the murder of Odin Lloyd has been scheduled for October 6, there are many, including Judge Susan Garsh, who seriously doubt if the trial will actually get under way that soon. The defense is likely to drag their feet with motions to change the venue of the trial and otherwise delay the proceedings.
The judicial system is a large and laborious clockwork structure. Unforeseen delays could potentially back up Hernandez' trial date for months (via ESPN):
"Garsh said she was concerned that a tentative trial date of Oct. 6 was not realistic given the amount of evidence and additional motions she anticipates will be filed.
"One of Hernandez's lawyers, James Sultan, told her he anticipated that it was possible they would file for a change of venue.
"'We're not prepared to do that now,' he said. 'That may well be coming.'"
Though the prosecution assures the court that they have an abundance of evidence linking Hernandez to the murder of former semi-pro linebacker Odin Lloyd, Hernandez' defense team are there to undermine them at every turn (via CNN):
"Hernandez's lawyers have argued the state has failed to meet minimum probable-cause standards to make that first-degree murder charge stick...
"'Who killed Mr. Lloyd? Why? Whether it was part of a plan and if so, whose plan? What happened to the car, and what happened at the scene?' Sultan argued in that hearing."
Hernandez is also facing murder charges involving a double homicide in 2012.
