DC Comics ‘Arrow’ Stephen Amell Compares Hacked Ebay Chairty Raffle To iTunes, Rihanna and Kings of Leon [FACEBOOK] [UPDATE]

Stephen Amell has taken up the good fight, lending his time and using his fame to raise money for Prayers For Sophie. Sophie is a brave young child who suffers from rare Optic Pathway Glioma brain tumor. The DC Comics Arrow star had originally planned an Ebay auction for the cause, only to have hackers hijack the winners account. The Emerald Archer then switched to a raffle, the results of which he has compared to iTunes, invoking the names of Rihanna, Kings of Leon and Robin Thicke.

Stephen Amell learned the hard way that the internet is no place for heroes, when his charity Ebay auction was hijacked by hackers. Amell explained the failings in a Facebook post, writing:

“Here's what happened: I like to operate from the standpoint that the world is filled with good people who want to support causes. Unfortunately, the world is also filled with assholes who want to artificially inflate an auction in the hopes that... I don't even know. You can't rationalize people without good sense. We had a bunch of people spamming the beginning of the auction. In the latter stages we had a number of reputable eBay people back out. The winning bidder claimed someone hacked her account. Why? I have no idea. Maybe they skipped school the day the teacher outlined the basic parameters of human decency. Maybe they were worried that I wasn't who I claim to be.”

Amell later took responsibility for the failing, adding:

“The whole scenario was a lot to wrap my head around. I should have realized that buyer requirements were a must. They now exist. I should have started with a shorter auction and only shipped to North American bidders. Those are now the parameters.

That is just what Stephen Amell did. He changed the rules for the auction, making it a $5.00 raffle instead of your standard auction. The new raffle proved successful and now Amell is happy reporting on the results, Facebooking:

“A few years ago I read an interesting book called The Long Tail. It's all about how companies like iTunes make more money off of people buying individual songs from (relatively) obscure artists because the market place for those guys (the 98%) is bigger than the marketplace for the top 2%. Artists like Rihanna, Kings of Leon and Robin Thicke (kidding). In any event... this is all a convoluted way for me to share that a raffle where tickets are $5 (doesn't seem like much) has raised $32,000 in a little over 3 days. That's real money going to a family who really need it. I'm literally awash in the glow of generosity.”
