Belgian Waffle Boycott Bust As USA Fails Against Belgium 2-1 Sam Adams Defends Stella

Sad news, bad news. The idiotic boycott of all things Belgian didn't do squat last week as the USA Men's Team lost against Belgium 2-1. Of all the cheesy, nationalistic fails in recent memory (Freedom Fries, anyone?) the great Belgian Waffle Boycott of 2014 is near the top of the list. Even Sam Adams, a leading purveyor of Belgian-style beers, joined in the waffle debacle. They made a point to defend Stella Artois by throwing the light, fluffy confection under the bus. What a bust.

Jim Koch, founder of Samuel Adams beer, supports a beer drinker's right to choose. He suggested prior to Team USA's World Cup match against Belgium last week that if they wanted to stick it to Belgium, leave the beer out of it (via TMZ):

"We hear some people are boycotting their favorite Belgian beers (like Stella) in support of Team USA... I can't say I agree with beer boycotts because then you're giving up your right to drink your favorite beer!

"For me, I'll be cheering on Team USA with a Samuel Adams Boston Lager, my favorite. If you really want to show patriotism, I say boycott Brussels sprouts or Belgian waffles."

So ridiculously out of hand was this boycott idea, even a major chain, Waffle House, joined the bandwagon. Writer Jeff Borzello never really liked them anyway, but his loyalty to breakfast foods can only be pushed so far (via CBS Sports):

"'We support a boycott on Belgian Waffles,' a rep told TMZ. 'We support America. We don't support Belgian Waffles.'

"Personally, I think Belgian waffles are inferior to pancakes and French toast when it comes to carbo-loading breakfasts that require syrup, so this wouldn't be too difficult.

"Now, if someone called for a boycott on bacon, we would have an issue. I'm just going to pretend the United States invented bacon, so there will never be a problem."
