Former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan was the intended victim of a homeless man named Andre Johnson on Tuesday. Johnson never got near the co-host of Good Morning America, but upon his arrest made it clear that he was trying to stab the former NFL star. Information is still limited but the apparent stalker has been thwarted and subjected to a psych evaluation. Thankfully, no one was harmed during the incident. Strahan has yet to comment on how it feels to escape death or what he thinks of his would-be killer. The Subway sandwich loving Strahan was not even notified of the situation until hours later.
According to reports, Johnson was sent away one time after trying to get into the studio. When he came back with a knife, a police officer took him down before he could stab the security guard in his way (via New York Daily News):
"A source said he later told cops, 'I was there to kill Michael Strahan.'
"In a statement, Jeffrey Schneider, senior vice president of ABC News said, 'We are incredibly indebted to the heroic and fast-acting police officer who swiftly took down the suspect in Times Square.'"
Johnson was arrested and questioned, during which time he was given a psychiatric evaluation. There is no news yet as to the results of those tests.
Strahan was apparently not even aware of the situation until much later because the situation was handled so quickly and effectively (via CBS Sports):
"It was a scary situation but thanks to the fast actions of NYPD the situation was quickly under control,"
Stay tuned as more information becomes available on Strahan's thoughts and the status of his assailant, Andre Johnson.
