Panthers fans may be upset to learn that Cam Newton has been stepping out... on his teammates, that is. At a promotional event for the Under Armour sports apparel line the Carolina QB was seen tossing the football around with fellow endorsers Randall Cobb and Torrey Smith. It was almost like cheating. His normal Panthers receivers weren't there, though, rookie Kelvin Benjamin joined him. It's a good thing, too, because the normally reclusive field general seems to be forming a bond with the young receiver. That bodes well for the Panthers, who went 12-4 last year despite what some believe to be a less than stellar wide out core. And it bodes well for Newton, who injured himself last year, and is coming off minor ankle surgery with high hopes of another playoff berth in 2014.
Newton's recovery is being closely watched by fans and teammates alike. Despite a strong defense it is Newton that provides the spark for this Panther team. As the de facto team leader Newton is putting a lot of pressure on himself to deliver (via Sports Injury Alert):
"Excited to get back out there. Not 100 percent yet, but any progress is good progress. My mind was moving faster than my body, but that comes with time. I'm feeling better than I thought I would at this point looking at the calendar. Right now it's trying to get 100 percent."
For those Panther fans moping about the receiving core, or maybe wishing that Cobb and Smith were on the roster, perhaps they should focus on the growing chemistry between Cam and his newest receiver, Kelvin Benjamin (via Cat Crave):
"The relationship developing between our franchise quarterback and our number one pick bears significance that cannot be overlooked. We have watched Cam Newton grow over the past three seasons but this has been one facet we have yet to see from him, and it may be the most important. Cam has faced criticism before by being a bit of a loner in the past. Working out away from the team and sitting on the bench by himself doing his Michael Jordan impression."
