Former Atlanta Hawks power forward Dominique Wilkins has been dealing with diabetes since shortly after his retirement in 1999. The Human Highlight Film, as he is sometimes called, is now an advocate for responsible diet and exercise in an effort to educate people about living with diabetes. Wilkins, in consultation with an army of physicians and dieticians, has come up with an aggressive plan to fight diabetes in America.
Letting go of himself after retirement, Wilkins soon found out that he had diabetes. Having lost both his father and grandfather to the disease, he decided to use his resources to not only help himself, but others facing this potentially fatal, but easily manageable disease (via Marketwatch);
"'Diabetes is a complex disease and it takes a team to get the best results. When I was diagnosed with the disease, I formed my own "Diabetes Dream Team". They've taught me that small, simple changes can make a big difference, and I am excited to partner with Novo Nordisk to help others think differently about managing their diabetes.'"
Upon learning that he had the disease Wilkins acted immediately to change his lifestyle. Once seen as a death sentence, diabetes is now being treated largely with aggressive alterations to diet and exercise and is in some cases even reversible (via Diabetes Health):
"'I wanted to get my diabetes under control very quickly. Do whatever was necessary to get it under control.' He said. Dominique decided to start with an aggressive therapy by changing his diet, exercising more and taking medication. 'You have to treat diabetes as an opponent. It's not a curse or death sentence. My body let me know very quickly, that I needed to get back to working out.'"
