Crazy Donald Sterling Trial: Mental Competency Not An Issue, Racist Clippers Owner Suing Wife Shelly

Donald Sterling, the crazy old codger whose wife Shelly sold his basketball team for him after the NBA banned him for life and netted them almost $2 Billion, is suing her because his feelings were hurt. After being publicly eviscerated for racist comments he made to his alleged mistress V. Stiviano, the league, its players and its fans called for his removal. Even though Shelly's sale of the team was lucrative his feels he has been mistreated and embarrassed, particularly by the doctor's reports having him declared mentally incompetent. The judge for the trial, however, has said that Donald's mental competency will not be an issue.

One of Sterling's main reasons for resuming the trial (he decided not to pursue the matter, then changed his mind again) was the fact that his wife had him declared mentally incompetent. This had to sting his pride. So he got some doctor to contradict the first two doctors' findings (via TMZ):

"According to the report, Cummings found that Sterling has no signs of dementia and no lack of mental capacity -- but did show signs of MCI, mild cognitive impairment, which is common in people Sterling's age.

"The findings are SIGNIFICANTLY different than what is described in the report of the neurologists who say they examined Sterling in May. One doc says Sterling's mind is so off, he couldn't properly number a blank clock."

That may not matter, though, as the scope of the trial will be very narrow, essentially negating the issue of Sterling's faculties. The legality of the sale of the team hinges rather on the issue of the Sterling Family Trust, which Shelly claims he signed over to her for the express purpose of the sale (via USA Today):

"'We're very pleased the judge has agreed with us that this trial should have a very limited focus,' attorney Pierce O'Donnell said.

"Lawyer Adam Streisand, representing Ballmer, said, 'They always wanted to make this about Donald's capacity. They backed off.'"
