Everyone was shocked when Landon Donovan was cut from the American soccer team. They may be even more shocked that Team USA is winning without him. Donovan admitted that he was a little bitter, a little jealous. But after throwing a pity party in his mind Donovan rallied and decided to move on. No one likes to be fired but it doesn't do much good to be petty, now does it?
Watching the team early on, Donovan admits that he felt a small desire for revenge. He didn't necessarily want them to lose, but he definitely wanted to see a poor showing. Then, he says, he had a change of heart and approached the situation with a positive and fresh attitude (via USA Today):
"I'll be completely honest, watching them play Azerbaijan, inside, part of me was thinking, I hope the game doesn't go very well today. In my heart of hearts, I thought, if we get a 1-0 win and the team doesn't perform well, that would feel good.
"Then the next day I woke up and said to myself, that's a really crappy way to feel. That's a bad way to live your life, it doesn't help me, it doesn't help the team, it doesn't help the energy that the team needs."
Now, he says, he's just trying to focus on being a fan and rooting for his former teammates and fellow countrymen (via NESN):
"I love playing for that team, I love playing for this country, I'm not going to turn my back on them all of a sudden."
Now that he's squarely back in the fold and cheering Team USA we can all rest a little easier and see just how far the Americans can take it this year.
