Broadway Play 'Golden Boy' A Hit With Critics

Clifford Odet's Broadway play "Golden Boy," in the hands of director Bartlett Sher is winning over many fans and critics with excellent performances from the cast.

The Associated Press wrote:

"A dazzling revival of Clifford Odets' "Golden Boy" opened Thursday, still packing a punch after 75 years. Tyson could do well to watch how to successfully put together a show about the rise and fall of a boxer."

Elysa Gardner of USA Today wrote:

"Numrich nails every aspect of Joe's character: the goofy boyishness and wounded pride that dissolve as his confidence grows, unveiling layers of depth and charm that slicken and harden into something completely alien to his nature...You'll be hard-pressed to find a production, even in this season of robust revivals, that packs more visceral punch."

Paul Kolnik of Time Out New York wrote:

"Sher and the company get so much right about Odets: New York as a multiethnic circus; the poetic street patois; cynical but tender dames; youths ulcerating for the good life; and the eternal struggle between ideals and the big score."

"Golden Boy," is the story of the son of an Italian immigrant who has dreams of becoming a violinist and realizes that it can become true if he steps into a boxing ring. The young man finds himself torn between his musical career and the chance of fame and fortune he can get if he continues to box. It comes with a danger because the more he boxes the better chance he has of hurting his hands and his violin aspirations could end.

"Golden Boy," stars Seth Numrich who also played in "War Horse," as boxer Joe Bonaparte and will run from Nov. 9 to Dec. 6 at the Lincoln Center
