Michael Bennett Abandoned Puppy: Seattle Star Pays $15,000 to Tampa Kennel

Michael Bennett of the Seattle Seahawks paid $15,000 to a dog kennel in Tampa after leaving their puppy there in November of last year. Lucky Dog sued Bennett and his wife Pele for over $5000 after they abandoned their dog Koa, moving to Seattle and leaving him behind. After repeatedly evading calls and ignoring court orders they were ultimately compelled to pay a settlement of almost $15,000.

The Bennetts took their boxer Koa to Lucky Dog Daycare in Tampa in March of last year. Then, after almost ten months and innumerable calls Lucky Dog filed a lawsuit for $5 grand for taking care of the dog (via TMZ):

"But after months of chasing the guy ... and 3 months after M.B signed his new $28 million contract with Seattle ... the attorney for Lucky Dog tells us they FINALLY got a check from Bennett for $10k [now 15] ... thus, ending the legal war for good."

According to the kennel's lawyer Mark Aubin, Bennett and his wife's behavior was unacceptable (via Seattle Pi):

"'It wasn't good. That just isn't how you conduct business and that's not how you treat an animal.

"'It was foolish. It was ridiculous,' Aubin said. 'He abandoned the dog!'"

Despite the neglect of his original owners Koa (now named Quigley) has found a fresh start with a loving, caring family:

"The pup has a new name, Quigley, and seems to have recovered from a long year without any primary caretakers.

"'(Quigley is) now with a nice new family, gained all his weight back and is doing great,' said Aubin, who took the case pro-bono."

With Quigley in the safe care of new owners hopefully the high-profile case of dog abandonment will force others to reconsider before trying similar action.
