The Ram's already formidable defensive line is a little bit stronger this year as rookie Michael Sam looks to be shaping up to be a strong addition. The decision to beef up the front four didn't make sense at first, especially since many people weren't sure Sam could cut the mustard in the pros. St. Louis, however, is looking really smart right about now. Sam has gone from being an unknown quantity to a potential starter over the few months he's spent learning the tricks of the NFL big dogs. Now that a lot of the furor has died down over his being gay and having the gall to kiss his boyfriend on national television (sigh! It's 2014 people!) football fans and armchair analysts can evaluate his value on the field. The prognosis is good so far.
While Sam is smaller than the average defensive end he still has skills to build upon, like his speed and football intelligence. Russ Lande says his quick first step and physical style will be dangerous once he hits the weight room (via Bleacher Report):
"Although Sam lacks great bulk, he proved on film that he can transfer from speed to power to jolt and drive the offensive tackle backwards into the quarterback's lap. When he came out of his initial rush to try to power rush, he did a good job of maintaining pad level and using his hands aggressively to jolt the blockers before they could get their hands on him."
At this past week's rookie symposium Sam spoke to reporters about his experience so far in the NFL. In his words, he's just another rookie, which is just the way he wants it (via ABC News):
"It's very positive, it's very fun. I'm excited to be playing for the Rams, I'm excited to be in the NFL... It still hasn't hit me yet, it's still like a dream... They treat me like a rookie."
