Amidst a flurry of activity in the off-season, Russell Wilson and his Seahawks have been nominated for a couple of ESPY awards. The sports world's equivalent of the Grammys has been an annual event since 1993, and the ESPY nod is the first time Seattle has a real chance to win it on the heels of their Super Bowl victory. Wilson, meanwhile, has kept busy in the wake of his recent divorce announcement with charity work and numerous advertisements. The Seahawks also got their blinged-out Super Bowl rings last week, including former teammate Golden Tate, who has been accused of cheating with Wilson's estranged wife Ashton.
The Seattle Seahawks might win their first ever ESPY awards this year on the heels of their Super Bowl victory. The televised ceremony will be held on July 16 on ESPN.
Golden Tate, former receiver for the Seahawks, probably won't be sitting with his old teammates at the awards show. But he insists they're all cool (via Detroit Free Press):
"'That's one thing that they'll never give me crap for, because they understand it. They're inside the locker room; they understand what it's like inside these organizations, so they tip their hats to me. I think that's one thing that social-media people don't understand is that you've got to do what's best for yourself and your family sometimes. They understood very, very easily.'"
Wilson, who is up for the ESPY's "Best NFL Player", gets a lot of credit for his role in leading the Hawks to their impressive Super Bowl run last year. But sometimes things get lost in the big picture. Little things. The details (via Field Gulls):
"But Wilson's savvy at avoiding disaster--a big loss, a big hit or a costly turnover--is critical as well. Without these attributes, he wouldn't be nearly as special in my view. Really, it's the juxtaposition and synthesis of these diametrically-opposed qualities--free-wheeling playmaking, on one hand, and rock-solid game management, on the other--that make him such a unique and exceptional QB."
