Doctor Who’s loyalist have a dilemma on their hands this weekend. The Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, and his former companion Rose, Billie Piper, are squaring off on subscription TV. Eccleston’s new HBO series The Leftovers is debut against the Season 1 finale of Piper’s new Showtime series Penny Dreadful.
HBO is hoping to continue it summertime claim to Sunday nights long after True Blood is dead and gone. This Sunday the network will air the premier of the all new series The Leftovers. The new series is based on the Tom Perrotta's 2011 novel of the same name, and takes place after a rapture like event.
The official plot synopsis for the premiere episode of the new series reads:
“An adaptation of Tom Perrotta's novel about life in a small town after many of its residents vanished in a Rapture-like event begins with the upcoming third anniversary of the ‘Departure’ and a police chief's personal and professional struggles.”
Over on the other side of the dial Showtime will be airing the Season 1 finale of their new pulp-horror series Penny Dreadful. The show features an ensemble cast including Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Reeve Carney and Billie Piper. Piper is best known for her role on Doctor Who alongside Christopher Eccleston.
The official plot synopsis for the season finale, titled "Grand Guignol," reads:
“Season 1 ends with Vanessa and Sir Malcolm facing their worst nightmares.”
Both Penny Dreadful and The Leftovers air This Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. on Showtime and HBO respectively.
