The official Mega Millions lottery website warns players against scams, writing:

“‘You’ve won the lottery!’ It’s something that many people want to hear. But sometimes those words come from scammers who are trying to steal your money. Some of those scammers have falsely identified themselves as being affiliated with Mega Millions.

The scams often target older people and have been known to wipe out victims’ retirement savings.
The scams take many forms and the scammers use many tricks. In most cases, the criminals e-mail or call to tell intended victims they have won a large prize. They might identify themselves as being with Mega Millions or another legitimate lottery, even though Mega Millions is a game, not an organization.

“These scams all have one thing in common: They try to trick you into sending them money or personal information by claiming that you have won a large lottery prize.”

The site goes on to tell you how to properly play, adding:

“Mega Millions tickets cost $1.00 per play.

“Players may pick six numbers from two separate pools of numbers - five different numbers from 1 to 75 and one number from 1 to 15 - or select Easy Pick. You win the jackpot by matching all six winning numbers in a drawing.

“The jackpots start at $15 million and grow by a minimum of $5 million per draw each time the jackpot rolls.
“What if you win the jackpot?

“Annuity option: The Mega Millions annuity is paid out as one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments. Each payment is 5% bigger than the previous one. We used to pay the jackpot in equal installments, but players expressed concern that the cost of living would be increasing while their payments were not. We changed to payments that increase each year to help protect winners’ lifestyle and purchasing power.”
