Alex Rodriguez is dropping the lawsuit against the Yankees' team doctor Chris Ahmad which claimed negligence on Dr. Ahmad's part. The suit was one of three filed by A-Rod in retaliation to his unprecedented 162-game suspension by Major League Baseball for steroid use. Sources say that the legal battle is ending so that Rodriguez can return to baseball and try to end his career with a clean slate. After a prolonged legal and media battle, it seems like all parties are ready to move on.
According to A-Rod's lawyer Alan Ripka all the lawsuits have been dropped so that he can focus on returning to the Yankees and get back to playing baseball (via Law 360):
"'The medical malpractice case was discontinued because Alex Rodriguez's wants there to be no legal distractions as he approaches the new season with his team the Yankees. This determination is irrelevant to the issues claimed in his medical malpractice case,' Ripka said."
After receiving the suspension Rodriguez suit MLB and the Players Association which threatened to stalemate both parties. Those lawsuits, as well as the one against Dr. Ahmad, were clearly not going to end well for Rodriguez, as the proceedings would have likely done little more than to keep him out of the game for even longer.
Arbitrator Fredric Horowitz explained the extreme nature of the situation (via Sports On Earth):
"While this length of a suspension may be unprecedented for an MLB player... So is the misconduct he committed."
While Rodriguez may stand by his innocence, many feel that he did the right thing in swallowing his pride. Sometimes the only way to move on is to concede defeat (via Forbes):
"Rodriguez isn't the first to use performance-enhancing substances in sports (that list is longer than you might believe). He isn't the first to say he'd fight for his name in court (remember Barry Bonds?). He's just one that is used to getting his way."
