Last month’s Loot Crate was a bit of a disappointment. When all was said and done, the Adventure themed box was one cool shirt, a key chain and handful of broken toys. However, the subscription box survice turned things around this month. You could even say that they Transformed themselves with this month's Transformers themed box, (with a little help from Back to The Future’s Marty McPrime, and some Hex Bugs) Check our review of the Loot Crate survive below for all the details, and spoilers from the June 2014 crate.
Lets be honest, last month’s Loot Crate was a bit of a mess. Sure looters got a cool Legend of Zelda shirt and an exclusive bottle opener key chain, but the Adventure Time and Mine Craft items where both unoriginal and cheaply made. The blind bag/tin items were prone to fall apart. That is not the worst of it, the exclusive curator items were limiting and somewhat insulting gifts, that did more to stroke the ego of YouTubers than to survive the fans.
We spoke with a rep from Loot Crate last month about the inclusion of the curators:
“We had been wanting to work more closely with Maker Studios and their gaming vertical, Polaris, for a while, since so many of our Looters watch YouTube and are huge fans of some of their curators. Since we knew we were including Minecraft, Zelda, and Adventure Time items, we wanted some cool people who are some of the top in YouTube and played those games or were very familiar with the franchises to be a part of it. Through our conversations with Maker, we agreed on those five curators.
"The YouTubers wanted to include something small of their own that they thought their fans would find cute and fun. That's how the idea for the stickers and tattoos came about! Polaris sent over some files that included art unique to the creators, and we had them turned into tattoo and sticker sheets for our Looters. We also showed them a wide range of items for May's crate, and they picked some of their favorites for us. Their input helped us curate the crate overall.”
After the disappointing box last month, hopes were not high for June. However, they managed to turn things around. This month’s theme is Transform, and that is just what they did. So lets take a look at the loot.
Marty McPrime:
This was another t-shirt month. It is hard to go wrong with a geek themed t-shirt. This months shirt features a crossover between Back to the Future and Transformers. The red shirt features an Autobot version of Marty McFly, named Marty McPrime, standing beside the iconic Delorean. The shirt was provided by Nathan Davis & The Hundreds, with a description that reads:
“There was one thing that the Delorean couldn’t do and that was TRANSFORM> yeah, but if it could have transformed into anything it would be an amazing mash-up of Marty McFly and Optimus Prime!”
Transformers Blind Box:
Blind packaged vinyl figures are a given for each Loot Crate, and that is not a bad thing assuming their arms don’t snap off. This months blind box item come from Hasbro & The Loyal Subjects. Our crate came with a Bumblebee, which is not bad, but its also not a Starscream.
Transformers Sticker Set:
Hasbro & The Loyal Subjects also provided Transformer stickers, including either a Autobot (Looterbots) and or Decepticon (Decepticrate).
Transformers Hex Bugs:
Hasbro and First Innovations Labs bring us a special Transformer themed Hex Bug. The tiny bug toy, crawls around the floor by vibrating on tiny rubber legs. Our box came with yet another Bumblebee.
MLG Starter Kit and Wristband:
This month Loot Crate teamed up with Major League Gaming. The online gaming organizing proved both an exclusive wristband, as well as one month trial of their service, and a sticker set.
Throw in a few Warhead candies, a button and Loot Book and you have yourselves a pretty good crate. This months crate was a lot more satisfying than the previous one. If they keep this up next month, than they may have a regular subscriber.
