Miami Heat star LeBron will officially become a free agent on July 1 which doesn't necessarily mean he will leave the Heat but does mean that he will have a lot of leverage when negotiating a new contract with whomever he chooses. Maybe his announcement was a response to GM Pat Riley's press conference last week when Riley invoked family and commitment in his not-so-subtle plea for James to stay. Among the many things Riley discussed in his hour-long chat with the press had to do with James' wife Savannah. After months of rumors of Savannah Brinson being pregnant and various denials by representatives, Pat Riley spilled the beans last week.
No one wants to lose the greatest player in the world. When Pat Riley spoke with reporters last week he made it clear how important James was to the organization by invoking family and the news that James is expecting her third child with the NBA superstar (via CBS Miami):
"Riley dropped the nugget during his season-ending meeting with reporters on Thursday, saying, 'Savannah now is going to have a little baby girl to join her in the fight against the two boys and LeBron, which she needs.'"
The Heat are still trying to play it cool after the announcement that James is now a free agent. They insist that he is still likely to stay with Miami, and are respecting his wishes to look around and see what's out there (via ESPN):
"'I was informed this morning of his intentions. We fully expected LeBron to opt out and exercise his free-agent rights, so this does not come as a surprise,' Heat president Pat Riley said in a statement. 'As I said at the press conference last week, players have a right to free agency and, when they have these opportunities, the right to explore their options.'"
