The official Mega Millions lottery website is reporting on one of the recent big wins:
“An estimated $66 million Mega Millions jackpot was won in Michigan on June 13, with one winning ticket matching all six numbers – 7, 38, 46, 49 and 56, plus the Mega Ball of 1. The ticket has an estimated cash value of $37.9 million.
“Strangely enough, the ticket is the third jackpot-winning ticket sold in Michigan on a Friday the 13th, following earlier wins on June 13, 2008, and May 13, 2011. The only other Mega Millions jackpot winner sold on Friday the 13th was in New York, on March 13, 2009.
“Also in Friday’s drawing, one ticket, sold in Virginia, matched the first five numbers for a $1 million prize.
“The $66 million jackpot is the sixth Mega Millions jackpot won this year, following wins in Tennessee (January 3, $61 million), Florida and Maryland (March 18, splitting $414 million), New York (March 25, $20 million), California (April 4, $30 million) and Pennsylvania (May 20, $149 million). The latter prize is still unclaimed.”
The website has went on to warn players against scams, writing:
“‘You’ve won the lottery!’ It’s something that many people want to hear. But sometimes those words come from scammers who are trying to steal your money. Some of those scammers have falsely identified themselves as being affiliated with Mega Millions.
The scams often target older people and have been known to wipe out victims’ retirement savings.
The scams take many forms and the scammers use many tricks. In most cases, the criminals e-mail or call to tell intended victims they have won a large prize. They might identify themselves as being with Mega Millions or another legitimate lottery, even though Mega Millions is a game, not an organization.
“These scams all have one thing in common: They try to trick you into sending them money or personal information by claiming that you have won a large lottery prize.”
