Blake Griffin and teammate Chris Paul are both superb athletes, each being selected as all-stars this year. But these talented young stars have more to offer than just basketball. The two are both gifted actors, as evidenced by their respective ad campaigns for Kia and State Farm. In the wake of the Donald Sterling controversy and under new ownership, the Clippers stand poised to pose a real threat in the NBA post-season for years to come. And with the Clippers' roster and the combined star power of their team leaders, are the clippers on the verge of becoming LA's premiere franchise over the Lakers?
After an impressive showing in this year's playoffs it's safe to say that the "other" LA team is finally ready to make a serious challenge. The question everyone has been asking is, "Are the Clippers THE basketball team in LA now?" The stats alone are impressive (via Fox Sports):
"Paul and Griffin helped the Clippers to the most successful regular season in franchise history (57-25), including the club's second straight Pacific Division title.
"Paul led the NBA in assists (10.7) and steals (2.48) per game, while averaging 19.1 points and 4.3 rebounds.
"Griffin, a four-time NBA All-Star, averaged a team-high 24.1 points and 9.5 rebounds."
But numbers alone don't tell the whole story. The Lakers have Kobe Bryant, but that's about it. The legacy of the Lakers has always been a free-wheeling attitude and a Hollywood swagger befitting a team of stars.
Now it looks like the Clippers are building a franchise in the mold of the Lakers of old. With multiple product endorsements aimed simultaneously at a youth demographic as well as family-friendly spots, the Clippers are building a franchise basically from scratch. Combining a winning team with ubiquitous media presence, and a new owner dead set on putting the Sterling fiasco behind them, the Clippers are entering the first days of a new empire on the rise.
