It seems that the baller formerly known as Ron Artest has his sights set on coaching in the NBA. While he's not quite ready for that yet, Metta World Peace has a plan. To start he has taken an assistant's job with the high school girls' squad where his daughter used to play. If the job works out, in a few years he may be headed to the pros.
While he hasn't officially retired from the NBA, Metta World Peace has a gig lined up that will hopefully help him toward his goal of becoming an NBA coach (via TMZ):
"Peace recently accepted a job as an assistant coach at Palisades High School in Southern California -- and head coach Torino Johnson tells us Metta is dead serious about the job.
"In fact, Johnson says Metta first called him up to ask about working with the team YEARS AGO ... when Metta's daughter was playing for the squad.
"Johnson says he didn't think Peace was serious at first -- but Metta stayed on him and followed up with an email expressing a very real interest in wanting to work the sidelines."
Johnson says that Peace should have no trouble reaching his goal one day, with his great attitude and high basketball IQ (via New York Daily News):
"'He'll be heavily involved in our program,' Johnson told the newspaper. 'We keep having, it's an ongoing dialog, but it's all positive. There's no out. The only purpose for this is to be positive and to be impactful - and this is of his choosing.'"
As a young player named Ron Artest, Peace spent much of his professional career mired in controversy. But after a name change and hopefully many years of growth and wisdom, perhaps Peace can share his knowledge and enthusiasm for the game with a new generation of players.
