Disney’s Into the Wood’s is about six-months away from it’s Christmas 2014 releases, but many fans might not be too happy with the present that the studio has in store. Composer Stephen Sondheim has recently confirmed that the new movies, starring Johnny Depp, Chris Pine and Meryl Streep, will be alot different the original musical.
The musical may be based on classic fairy tales but it doesn’t really have the happiest of endings, or beginnings. Into the Woods is a much darker tale than we have come to expect from Disney movie. One of the more controversial parts of the musical is the relationship between the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood.
Playbill is now reporting that the show’s composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim has admitted to some major show changes, including the Wolf’s relationship with Red, telling teachers at an event at Sardi's:
"Well, you'll be happy to know that Disney had the same objections. You will find in the movie that Rapunzel does not get killed, and the prince does not sleep with the [Baker's Wife]. You know, if I were a Disney executive I probably would say the same thing."
The legendary composer of Company, Sweeney Todd and Assassins, went on to talk about the nature of compromise:
“Censorship is part of our puritanical ethics, and it's something that they're going to have to deal with. There has to be a point at which you don't compromise anymore, but that may mean that you won't get anyone to sell your painting or perform your musical. You have to deal with reality."
