If you have ever seen Game of Thrones than you know that anyone could die at anytime. Where most of the deaths are usually Starks, this past season two big baddies bought the farm. King Joffrey and Tywin Lannister both met their end in Season 4. Now George R.R. Martian is opening up about his decision to kill them off. Martin also has plans to kill off two charity donors.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, George R.R. Martin was asked about his decision to kill off Joffrey and his grand papa Tywin Lannister in the same book. Martin’s answer had a littl
“The process of writing for me comes from a different part of the brain than the rational one. I don’t know if I believe all this right-brain/left-brain stuff, but I don’t sit down and make decisions like, ‘Yes I need a decision here, I need something there.’ I set the characters in motion, I set the story in motion, and they lead me to certain places. Admittedly, sometimes they lead me down a dead end and I go, ‘This isn’t going to work, I really painted myself in a corner here, I gotta go back and change this.’ But sometimes they lead me to very powerful places.”
However, Martin has made a conscious decision to kill off two new characters in his next book. The author auctioned off the chance to be a martyr in his upcoming book, for the low, low price of $20,000. One of the lucky winners is Dave Goldblatt, a Facebook employee who told reporters about his upcoming death:
"I’m fortunate enough to be in a position to do this cool thing, and it's going toward a good cause, I don't think I'm doing anything extraordinary."
