The NFL's number one draft pick, Jadeveon Clowney of the Houston Texans, underwent surgery for a hernia. While some estimates have him back in action in 3-4 weeks, others place it at closer to 6. While the specific time table is uncertain, he should return by the time training camp starts in roughly six weeks.
Despite accusations his senior year that Clowney is lazy and doesn't work hard, coaches have been impressed with his performance at OTA's. The hernia is fairly non-threatening if taken care of quickly, so trainers agreed that the smart move was to go ahead and operate and let Clowney heal in the off-season rather than miss any games (via ESPN):
"'We just looked at it as, let's take care of it now, and he'll be ready for training camp,' O'Brien said. 'And we're looking forward to seeing him in training camp.'"
The South Carolina native appears to be giving a winning performance so far, despite his injuries and the critics. He says he has also been receiving advice and tutelage from Texans' star defensive end J.J. Watts (via Bleacher Report):
"He told me he's going to give me every piece of knowledge to help me improve my game. He's going to show me like a mentor or big brother to me and I told him I appreciate that and I'm looking forward to working with him."
The Texans will be counting on Watt and Clowney to shut down offenses and snap their fourteen-game losing streak. Coach Bill O'Brien, the Texans' third since their creation in 2002, is looking for a miracle.
If Clowney recovers as expected and returns to the field healthy and good as new, will he be enough to change the fortunes of this struggling franchise?
