Some leading UK arts administrative figures have got gongs in the Queen's Birthday Honors, alongside the artists themselves. Chief among these are John Berry, the artistic director of English National Opera who is named a CBE, and the artist managers Martin Campbell-White and Robert Rattray (the latter recently hopped the pond and the fence to take up a position at the Metropolitan Opera). The Ediburgh Fringe Festival chief Kath Mainland also gets made a CBE.
Among the artists honored, the soprano Susan Bullock is named CBE - a damehood cannot be far behind for a dramatic soprano of her status (trivia - we now know that her middle name is Margaret). The great pianist Andras Schiff gets a knighthood. Two regional conductors get the MBE - Martin Binks (Leeds Symphony) and Andrew Penny (Hull Philharmonic).
Away from classical music, other arts figures to be honored include the pop singer Cerys Matthews. And, the biggest entertainment star in the list, the actress Angelina Jolie has been made an honorary dame, not for her acting but for her work raising awareness of issues relating to sexual violence around the world.
