This week has brought bad news and more bad news for former NFL star Aaron Hernandez. The ex-Patriots tight end is on trial for murder, and he may not be able to afford his legal team. The fact that he might lose his lawyers is bad enough, but the prosecution is also examining his tattoos which could prove useful to their case.
Last month officials put the word out that they wanted to speak with area tattoo artists or anyone who may have done work on Hernandez. While there is an unwritten code that artists don't divulge personal information about their clients, however, that may be a different story if a judge and/or the Grand Jury want to talk.
Then again, the ink might speak a lot more loudly. While interpretation and speculation aren't admissible in a court of law any information about tattoos and the culture of criminal activity as it relates to tattoo culture could be helpful to the prosecution (via Detroit Free Press):
"Photos of Hernandez show he has had five stars and other tattoo work added to his right forearm over the past few years. While many star tattoos have nothing to do with crime, they sometimes can be used to represent killings, said Kevin Waters, a criminal justice professor at Northern Michigan University and former agent with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration."
As if that wasn't enough of a blow, it now seems that unless he gets some outside help Hernandez might lose his legal team as well (via Sports World News):
"In recent weeks, Hernandez, who made at least $11.2 million in his three seasons with the New England Patriots, has struggled in paying off his legal expenses, recently prompting at least two of his attorneys to notify the court they might not be able to continue representing him for much longer."
